Ross Barkley could become a lost talent at Everton – Roy Hodgson

Former England manager Roy Hodgson believes Ross Barkley is in danger of becoming a lost talent at Everton but believes the midfielder has the potential to succeed at any side he plays for.
Barkley looks set to depart Everton this summer after refusing to sign a new deal at Goodison Park with Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United all reportedly keeping tabs on the playmaker.
With Everton signing Wayne Rooney and also looking at Gylfi Sigurdsson it appears Barkley is set to be surplus to requirements if he remains at the club, and Hodgson is worried he will be forgotten about if he doesn’t move on.
The former England boss took Barkley to the European Championships last summer, but didn’t play the 23-year-old for a single minute, but Hodgson is still confident in the midfielder’s ability.
Hodgson admits that Barkley’s style of play comes with a risk but only a certain calibre of player can get away with performing in such a manner.
As reported by the Mirror, Hodgson was speaking in Beijing at the Leaders Sport Business Summit on Friday.
When asked if Barkley was at risk of becoming a lost talent, he said: “Yes, he is. Unfortunately, that’s because of the pressures we put on people.
“I got the impression with Ross that it wasn’t so much Everton were unhappy with him, but that they were unhappy he wasn’t signing a new contract. I hope he stays on board, because he’s definitely a talent.
“If Ross can find a club where people believe in him as much as we did in the England set-up, he’ll do well. Players with special talent are players who will divide opinion. He’s a risky passer. He’s a midfielder who will turn with the ball.
“He will take players on and go past them. He will attempt a shot from 20 yards. As a result, some of the 20-yard shots will fly over the crossbar and people will say he should’ve passed it and some of the turns in midfield will be dispossessed and some of the risky passes will be cut out.
“But there are lots of players who can’t produce that level of ability.”
