Andres Iniesta “is one of the best players in Spain’s history”, says Barcelona legend Xavi
Former Barcelona midfielder Xavi has described his ex-teammate Andres Iniesta as “one of the best players in the history of Spain”.
At the age of 33, Iniesta is now very much in the latter stages of his career and the midfielder has less than a year remaining on his contract at the Camp Nou.
Xavi, who now plays for Al Sadd, believes that his former teammate has earned the right to decide his future and stressed that the Catalan giants still need him.
Xavi told Mundo Deportivo: “Iniesta has earned the right to decide. His situation does not remind me of my last season, because he’s played every major game this year, he’s still got time for a while.
“You have to respect your decision no matter what, if you want to renew, if you do not want to do it, he is a player who has made history in the club, one of the best players in the history of Spain.
“His continuity will depend on him, hopefully he can continue and he is physically fit, because Barca needs him.”

Iniesta has been capped by Spain on 113 occasions and scored the winning goal in the 2010 World Cup final against the Netherlands, while he won the European Championship in both 2008 and 2012.
Still a fine distributor of the ball, Iniesta was successful with 89% of the passes that he attempted in La Liga last season, while he completed 80% of the take-ons that he attempted.

Barcelona have several central midfield options at present and are looking to strengthen in that area, but it appears that Iniesta still remains a major part of their plans going into next season.
