“I don’t want him to leave” – Sergio Romero keen for David De Gea to stay at Manchester United

Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero insists he’s relishing competing with David de Gea for the number one spot.

Since arriving at Old Trafford in the summer of 2015, the Argentine had been reduced to acting as an understudy to the Spaniard, but got his fair share of first-team chances under Jose Mourinho last season.
After impressing in between the sticks in United’s successful Europa League winning campaign, Romero was rewarded with a brand new four-year contract – keeping him at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ until 2021 at the latest.
With Real Madrid once again linked with a move for de Gea this summer, there is a view that Romero would benefit from such a transfer as it would enable him as the first-choice stopper, but it’s a view the 30-year-old doesn’t share.
“Since I came to this team, I said I need to compete with David because in that way we can keep the competition level high,” Romero told ESPN.
“I don’t want him to leave. We are friends. And if he stays here, it will help me to be better.”
Romero’s record when called upon was fairly impressive. In the Premier League he kept two clean sheets in his only two appearances and even saved a penalty from Manolo Gabbiandini in a goalless draw against Southampton.
Furthermore, he kept the most clean sheets in the Europa League (8) and it remains to be seen just how Mourinho juggles between having two very good goalkeepers on his books next season.
