Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez admits he dreams of one day playing the Premier League amid interest from Manchester United and Liverpool.
The Uruguayan international has developed into a fine player ever since arriving from Danubio in the summer of 2013 and had often been selected to partner Diego Godin at the heart of Atletico’s defence when fit and available for selection.
However, he wasn’t a regular in the side under Diego Simeone last season – starting just 12 La Liga games – which led to speculation that he was seeking a move away from the Vicente Calderon during the January transfer window.
With Atleti unable to conduct any business this summer because of their transfer ban, it’s unlikely Gimenez will be allowed to leave but the 22-year-old – who will soon receive an EU passport – admits he’s open to a move to England in the future.
“I dream of playing in the Premier League because the games are so evenly matched,” he told Direct TV Uruguay, as reported by AS.
“I would like to go, but if Atlético contract me for life, I’ll stay.
“Atlético have taught me so much since the day I arrived. I’m privileged to be at the club.
“I’m calm about transfer rumours and I always discuss them with my representatives.”
Last season saw Gimenez’s versatility come to the fore. He played at right-back against Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final and produced an excellent performance in the earlier round of the competition against Leicester City when operating as a defensive midfielder.
