Jose Mourinho: “Model professional” Wayne Rooney will remain in Man United’s history books for many years to come

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has praised “model professional” Wayne Rooney after the 31-year-old sealed his return to Everton.

Rooney leaves United after 13 years, having won every possible major honour, while he is also the club’s highest ever scorer with 253 goals.
Mourinho stated that Rooney, who has signed a two-year deal with Everton, “will remain in the history books for many years to come”.
Mourinho told United’s official website:  “It is no secret that I have long been an admirer of Wayne; he has been a model professional throughout his time at the club and will remain in the history books for many years to come.
“It is never easy to see a great player playing less football than he would like and I could not stand in his way when he asked to go back to Everton.
“His experience, focus and determination will be missed and I wish him well for the future.”
Rooney only worked with Mourinho for a year and endured a rather frustrating season as he struggled for both form and fitness, while he lost his place in the starting line-up.
However, Rooney still managed to create 34 chances in the Premier League and had an average pass accuracy of 84% and will undoubtedly remain revered by United supporters, having spent the majority of his career at the club and played a part in many major successes along the way.

It appears, though, that this was the right time for Rooney to move on given the difficulties he experienced last campaign.
