Luka Modric takes Real Madrid’s No.10 shirt from James Rodriguez

Croatian midfielder Luka Modric has inherited the number 10 jersey at Real Madrid following James Rodriguez’s recent departure to Bayern Munich.

Rodriguez, who has reunited with former Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti in Germany, penned a two-year loan deal with the option to buy.
As a result the much-vaunted number 10 shirt became available with many observers feeling the club’s rising star Marco Asensio would be given the squad number.
However, it’s turned out the honour has been given to Modric, who until now wore number 19, further cementing his status as one of the most important players under the auspices of manager Zinedine Zidane.

The 31-year-old controlling midfielder, who also captains his national team, graduated from Dinamo Zagreb’s esteemed academy before relocating to Tottenham Hotspur in 2008.

During his time in England he managed 17 goals and 27 assists across 160 matches in all competitions.
A standout Euro 2012 saw Real Madrid part with around £25m for his services and he has to date made 214 appearances (11 goals, 32 assists) playing a pivotal role in their last three European Cup triumphs.
Such is his status and importance to Los Blancos the Croat signed a new contract extension last October keeping him at the Bernabeu until June 2020.
