Tottenham deny any takeover discussions amid rumours of £1bn Zuckerburg bid

Tottenham have released a statement denying that they have held conversations about a potential takeover of the club amid rumours of a £1 billion bid headed up by Facebook owner Mark Zuckerburg.

Reports surfaced on Sunday in the Sunday Times that 33-year-old Zuckerburg – who reportedly is worth £49bn – was fronting a move by American company Iconiq Capital to purchase the north London club.
Zuckerburg uses the company to handle his finances – as do a number of Silicon Valley billionaires –  and was ready to make an offer for Tottenham.
However the Premier League side have now issued a statement in which they insist that at no point have they received an offer to buy Tottenham, despite the indication that owner Joe Lewis had rejected an £882.6m offer.
The statement indicates that the meeting referenced in the report was in fact with finance group Rothschild in order to secure the funding to finance the new stadium at White Hart Lane.
The full statement reads: “The Club engaged Rothschild to secure the funding for the new stadium. As expected many proposals came forward including bank debt and equity investment.

“The Club announced on 31 May 2017 the completion of the bank debt financing for the new stadium with a consortium of banks involving Bank of America Merrill Lynch International Limited, Goldman Sachs Bank USA and HSBC Bank plc. The Board believes this was the optimum solution in the interests of fans, employees and shareholders and for the continued development of the Club.
“The Board is not in any discussions relating to a takeover offer for the Club.”
Tottenham finished second in the Premier League last season under Mauricio Pochettino and are set to play the entire new campaign at Wembley.
