Tottenham fans must trust Pochettino over Kyle Walker sale – Jermaine Jenas

Jermaine Jenas is worried to see Tottenham strengthen a major rival in Manchester City by selling them Kyle Walker but believes Mauricio Pochettino has done enough to earn the fans’ trust.
Walker became the most expensive defender ever in world football after Spurs agreed to sell the right-back to Manchester City in a reported £50m deal last week.
Tottenham already have a ready-made replacement in Kieran Trippier, who overtook Walker as the club’s no.1 right-back at the end of last season, but Jenas is still concerned that Spurs made one of their title rivals a better team.
But the former Spurs midfielder believes it’s only natural for some players to want to go elsewhere and earn more money and reckons fans need to trust Pochettino’s decisions in the transfer window.
Speaking to The Independent, Jenas said: “The disappointing thing from a Spurs point of view is that Walker has gone to Manchester City, and in doing so he has massively strengthened a competitor for that Premier League title.
“The other side to that is that Spurs were always going to sell to the highest bidder, and the clubs in the Premier League have the most money.
“From the club’s perspective they should trust the manager. He has gone way over and above in terms of being able to earn that trust from the fans. If it was his decision to sell Kyle then I’m sure he has a plan in place.
“He has nurtured Kieran Trippier into a position where he will play a number of games this year, and I’d be surprised if he didn’t bring in someone with more experience to help out.
“There will always be the odd player that will say ‘I’m a better player than that player sat across me in the England dressing room, and he’s getting double the amount of money as me’. Some players reach a certain stage in their careers where they feel they need to earn more money.”
So far this summer Tottenham are the only team to not make a signing in the Premier League, although the club have been linked with Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez in the last week.
Tottenham finished second in the top flight last campaign and have challenged for the league in the last two seasons, but a lack of incoming players along with serious spending by other clubs may worry supporters.
