Wojciech Szczesny says he joined Juventus to learn from “one of the best goalkeepers in history” Gianluigi Buffon

Wojciech Szczesny says he’s looking forward to the prospect of learning from “one of the best goalkeepers in history” Gianluigi Buffon.

After two relatively successful years in Serie A with AS Roma, the Poland international left Arsenal on a permanent basis on Wednesday as he joined Juventus for a reported £10m fee.
Despite being viewed as a number one in his own right, the 24-year-old will almost certainly begin the new season as back-up to Buffon, but admits the Italian legend’s presence was a factor behind his decision to join.

“Was Buffon’s presence a factor? Yes, yes because I want to improve so there’s no better opportunity to do that than training with Gianluigi Buffon,” he told JTV, as reported by Football Italia.
“He’s one of the best, or the best, goalkeepers in history, not just the history of Italian football but football all over the world.
“Now I have the opportunity to train with him, I want to improve and learn from him.
“I’m not finished, I’m a goalkeeper who always wants to improve. I’m an explosive, I like to make these saves which seem impossible.
“I still have to improve in terms of consistency though, because I want to be a goalkeeper on Buffon’s level, or at least close.
“You have to reach that level in every game, not just in two or three games per season. So I have to improve.”
In terms of clean sheets, no goalkeeper – including Buffon – could better Szczesny’s total of 14 across the entire top flight of Italian football last season and could easily become Juve’s first-choice in between the sticks once the 39-year-old retires at the end of next season.
Once tipped to be the Gunners’ long-term option between the sticks, Szczesny ultimately departed the Emirates Stadium without fulfilling his potential in north London, but has a chance to make a name for himself with the Bianconeri.
